Volunteer

Here are some ongoing opportunities to get involved and make a difference.

Derby Day

The premiere event for Sumter takes place the first Saturday in May.  The Derby Day Sumter party features a live broadcast of the fastest two minutes in sports, followed by an evening of Southern grace, charm, and hospitality that would not be complete without the food, fashion, music, and a silent auction that makes any derby event memorable!

We are always looking for event volunteers for our annual fundraising event, Derby Day Sumter. If you would like to participate by volunteering to set up, tear down, or help during the event, please contact United Way at (803)773-7935.

United Way Diamonds

United Way Diamonds continues to seek opportunities to partner with the community promoting positive change in the youth served.

Our Men's Day Wednesday program is looking for male volunteers to visit a local school one Wednesday a month for a few hours during the school year.  Our male volunteers mentor small groups of teens, meet and greet students in the hallways, and shake hands when passing.

Men's Day Wednesday volunteers are a positive influence that students can look up to and relate to.  If you want to be a role model in your community, and you are interested in having a significant and positive effect on a child's life, then this program is for you!

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer contact Melanie Dees at (803)773-7935 ext.113 or via email.

Reading Success AmeriCorps

Reading Success AmeriCorps understands that early grade reading is the key to academic achievement.  United Way is working to support the education of all children in our communities.

The Reading Success AmeriCorps Program provides literacy tutoring to children in kindergarten through third grade at service sites in Lee and Sumter Counties.  Individuals commit to a one-year term of service by becoming a member of the AmeriCorps Program engaging in small group and one-on-one tutoring.
