AmeriCorps Members 'Rock' Into the New School Year
The United Way Reading Success AmeriCorps Program is a literacy tutoring program that has served nearly 2,000 students in Lee and Sumter counties over the last 4 years. Moving into year five, the program provides community members to help engage student’s kindergarten through third grade in small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring.
If you are 18 years or older with a High School diploma/GED or a retiree who is available for 10 to 20 hours per week during regular school hours (7:30am to 2:30pm), we have a few service positions available. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the school semester. We are looking for more members to serve Lee County Schools especially. Members will begin tutoring in the schools September 5th. You can find the application on our website.
Program benefits include: a bimonthly living allowance, an education award upon completion of service, experience for resumes, and student loan deferment.
The program also provides members with a multitude of other ways to support our community beyond literacy. AmeriCorps members will be participating in the HSNA Art in the Park Saturday, September 23, 2017. We encourage community members to bring their kids and come “Rock and Read” with United Way’s AmeriCorps members. Children will have the opportunity to paint rocks to hide and decorate bookmarks to take home. The painted rocks will have the United Way office information on them so once they are found and returned to the office, the finder will receive a book as a prize. We will also have ‘rock’ing chairs and ‘rock’ing horses at the event along with children’s books to offer a reading time while art work dries.
We will be providing other community-based service project throughout the program year.
The AmeriCorps program is looking for book donations. If anyone has new or slightly used children’s books he/she wishes to donate, the books may be dropped off at the United Way office at 215 N. Washington Street in Sumter.
If you are willing to commit your time to support our children and help the overall Sumter and Lee communities, please contact our new program director, Pamela Buddin at (803) 773-7935 to become an AmeriCorps member.
