Less than half of 3rd graders in Clarendon, Lee, and Sumter Counties are reading at grade level. Research proves it.  If a child does not read at grade level by 3rd grade, it is nearly impossible for him to catch up. There is a good chance he will not graduate on time or find a good job.

When a child struggles at school every day, he feels worthless and hopeless. These feelings follow him forever.

Our Reading Success AmeriCorps Program has collaborated with elementary schools in each of the three counties to assist in tackling the issue of 3rd grade reading success by providing literacy tutoring to help children improve their reading ability. Because of your gift to the United Way of Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties also helped us continue to offer reading support during the summer.

Although the coronavirus changed and challenged the way children are learning. We are working with each school to ensure that we are able to continue to provide the support and services children need.

We may be physically distant, but we are still working together to help others because we are Stronger when we are United.
