Sumter, SC (Aug 18, 2026) - FoodShare South Carolina, in partnership with United Way of Sumter, Clarendon & Lee Counties is launching the 25th FoodShare Hub in the state on Wednesday, August 26th at 11am at 215 N. Washington St. in Sumter, South Carolina, 29150. The Sumter FoodShare Hub will serve food insecure communities in the county with affordable fresh fruits and vegetables.

Food insecurity is defined as the lack of access and lack of presence of food that makes up a complete diet.  In Sumter County 11.6% of residents lack consistent access to adequate food and 18.5% of children live in food-insecure households. Families in Sumter County can now purchase a locally sourced 16 lbs. box of fresh fruits and vegetables for $5 on EBT/SNAP or $20 in cash.

Food insecurity can impact the way a person treats their chronic disease, which is plaguing our communal health. There are costs correlated with this inability that could have devastating impacts on our society. So, while we are interested in solving the immediate need for someone to have a full stomach, we are also creating long-term solutions to the problem, through timely, convenient and affordable access to fruits and vegetables in Sumter County.

FoodShare South Carolina is a network of Hubs across the state with the goal of enhancing the quality of life of families by creating access to fresh affordable food, quality cooking and education skills. Our work revolves around three tenets: community empowerment and engagement, increased financial opportunity, and physical revitalization.

United Way of Sumter, Clarendon & Lee Counties mobilizes resources and leaders that strengthen communities, focusing on the health, education, and financial stability of every person in their community to bridge the gap in essential services and resources; rooted in the commitment of health and wellness.
